Local file transfer vs cloud sharing

Choose between a nearby device connection and a cloud link by considering where the other person is, when they need the file, and how it will be accessed.

Local transfer suits a handoff between nearby devices. Cloud sharing suits a file someone needs to access later or from another location. Choose based on whether the recipient is nearby, whether you are both available now, and whether you need to keep a shared copy online.

Follow the file’s route

In a local phone-to-phone transfer, the devices establish a connection and exchange the file through it. The receiver needs to stay connected during the operation. Android supports Wi-Fi Direct connections without an existing access point. ShareGo’s nearby sharing follows this model rather than asking you to upload the selected file to a cloud drive first.

With a cloud-sharing workflow, the sender uploads a copy to a service and provides access, often through an account or a link. The recipient then retrieves it from that service. For example, Google Drive lets you choose whether a recipient can view, comment on, or edit a shared file. Its sharing instructions explain those permissions. Other services may use different controls.

Match the method to the moment

Your situation What to consider
Both phones are together now A local handoff can avoid a separate cloud upload.
The recipient is elsewhere Choose a method that supports remote access.
The recipient will download later A cloud link can keep a copy available after you leave.
You need ongoing edits or collaboration Check a service’s sharing and editing permissions.
You only need to hand over a file A direct transfer may be sufficient; verify the received copy.

A local transfer is not ongoing synchronization. Changing the original later does not imply that an already received copy changes with it. Likewise, copying a file is not the same as migrating an application’s private data or account.

“Local” describes the transfer, not every app request

Keep the file path separate from the app’s other activity. Installing an app, downloading a cloud-only source, checking for an update, or sending diagnostics can involve internet services even if the chosen file moves locally between phones.

Download any cloud-only source files before setting up the local transfer. For information about app data collection and use, read the privacy policy.

Compare time across the whole operation

For a nearby handoff, account for connecting, preparing the source, sending, and saving. For a cloud workflow, account for the upload, obtaining access, and the recipient’s download. Comparing only one segment produces an incomplete picture.

A fast internet connection does not determine every local Wi-Fi transfer speed. Device storage, radio conditions, and the number of files can matter. Our speed troubleshooting guide offers a way to separate these stages without promising a fixed number.

Keep the right copy

After either method, open the received file before deleting the source. If you use a cloud link, review who can access it and whether it should remain available. If you use a nearby session, close the session once both people are finished.

For the local connection options behind a phone handoff, continue with Wi-Fi Direct, hotspots, and local Wi-Fi. For a practical cross-platform path, start with Android and iPhone file sharing.
